Planting a Life-Giving Church

by | Nov 15, 2021 | Church Leadership, Church Planting

Planting a life-giving church requires leaders to have a clear understanding of what they are called to achieve. Here are a few tips to become an effective church planter.

Have A Clear Vision

Having a clear vision is one of the most important steps a new pastor must take to envision the calling God has placed on them. It’s all a matter of asking: “Why am I doing this, and how can I translate it in the most effective way possible?” Vision is so much more than a name, a logo, and a mission statement. Find a trusted mentor or ministry coach to help you with your “blind spots”. This is an important step, so don’t rush it and don’t “borrow” it from another ministry.

God has sent you for a reason and it’s not to be a cookie-cutter church plant. You are unique and will make a difference if you get vertical and find your voice and God’s vision for the local church.

Gather A Dependable Team

It’s vital to have a group of people that are united with a common vision. Your team can make or break the church plant. The launch team will be responsible for encouraging others to join the church. This is how church efforts are multiplied — by enlisting the help of people who share the same vision.

Focused Intentionality Is Required

Church planting requires faith to build a ministry from the ground up. When a church leader has the capacity to focus their intention on the purpose they want to achieve, it gets easier to see things through even when things seem impossible to accomplish.

Get A Structured Schedule

Setting aside time for work and personal life is a quick way to combat feeling consumed about the church’s objectives. Not having a schedule can lead to loss of focus and eventually, burnout. Set boundaries and designate specific hours for ministry activities, and take time to rest when needed.

A schedule can happen by accident or on purpose. If you are intentional with your time, you will more effective and your stress levels will be greatly reduced. BTW – guard your family time as well as a date night with your spouse. Prioritize those who you declare are your priority!

Develop A Specialized Strategy

It takes time to brainstorm on the best possible church planting approach, let alone implement it. Every new church planter needs a solid strategy and some helpful tips. From scheduling events to sermon planning and budgeting to advertising, strategizing requires both logic and instinct to design action plans that are aligned with the church’s goals. Read all you can get your hands on with regards to church planting and get a coach to help you on a regular basis.

There are people who have been there, done that, and even paid the “dumb tax”. Seek advice from those people, contextualize and implement. There is no need to make the same mistakes as others. Within this, you will also discover what worked.

Remember That You Have What It Takes

God has led you to this path for a reason. As a new pastor or church planter, always remember that you already have what it takes. You just need to keep in mind that the Lord qualifies you and has called you to start something that will stand the test of time.
