How Can You Help Your People Engage Culture?

by | May 6, 2013 | Church Leadership

One of the major challenges of leading a church is kicking your people out of it. If they are spending all of their time within the church and with other Christians, they’re not out there engaging culture and making disciples.

Engaging culture simply means living incarnationally among the people God has placed us near. We are to live in such a way that shows Jesus to them. Just as Jesus said, “My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working,” (John 5:17) our works are to line up with and illuminate what God is already doing. God is always at work—even if we see just a spark—and we are to do what we see him doing. We bring hope and transformation by joining him in his work.

Here are some good coaching questions you can ask your people to help them get on track and stay on track with engaging culture:

  • What do you like to do?
  • How can you do that with others who don’t already follow Jesus?
  • What needs do you see?
  • How can you serve?
  • Where do you sense God tugging on your heart lately?

These thoughts on how to help your people engage culture courtesy of my most recent book, The Missional Journey: multiplying disciples and churches that transform the world.   Also available in digital format (iBook, Kindle, Nook).
